Original Terministic Screens

I used to think I viewed the world pretty much exactly how everybody else does. But actually, that’s not how it is at all.

After leaning about Terministic Screens in class, I realized that everybody views the world differently–or through different lenses. Now, let’s say you would want to put on a pair of glasses that would show you how I see the world–what would you see?

Well first off, you would see lot’s and lot’s of lavender. For as long as I can remember, the color lavender has always been a color I gravitate towards and put in almost every crevice of my life: my water bottle, the walls in my room, my toenails, and so on.

Something else you may see is that I am a woman. I grew up with a strong mother to look up to and many other inspiring females in my life. Being a woman is something I hold very dear to me because it truly is one of my main characteristics of what makes me Megan. My mom always taught me how to fight for myself, but also how to be caring, genuine and loyal to others.

One of the most important people in my life and someone who truly shaped how I see the world–my mom.

Something else that is critical to who I am is my passion for being a journalist. I have been writing for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I began writing for a newspaper and actually interviewing people when I saw the power and possibility for change a journalist can create. When most people hear the word ‘journalist’, they tend to think of ‘Fake News’ or a reporter on a television screen. And yes, those may be accurate descriptions in one sense, but that’s not how I see it. I see the word ‘journalist’ meaning a storyteller. A storyteller is someone who wants to create a platform for others to share their goal or aspiration in life and also wants to find the truth in the world–that is what I see in a journalist.

Finally, something you may also see many, many flowers. I don’t know why, but for as long as I can remember I have always taken photos of flowers whenever I see them. They could be sunflowers, a hydrangea, hibiscus, or even a rose–you’ll find it on my camera roll. It may be because I was surrounded by flowers in our backyard where I grew up and it may remind me of home. I also tend to smell any flower I come across–particularly roses because whenever my dad would bring home flowers to my mom the whole kitchen would have that rose-scent and now it always reminds me of them.

My peculiar obsession with flowers

Overall, my terministic screens may be very different compared to others, but personally I am very proud of them. It wasn’t until recently when I realized that all of these little things, accompanied with many others, are what makes me Megan. Yes of course, don’t we always wish our life was different or believe that the grass is always greener on the other side. Well, I think this terministic screen exercise is a good way to remember how special each and every person is and how everything that surrounds our lives is what makes us who we are. And after figuring out what my “screens” would be, I never want to take these glasses off.
