For my final project, I created a website that uses an episode of “Queer Eye: We’re in Japan” along with several other sources in order to look at the lens of Travel and Orientalism more closely. The website I created, One Petal At A Time, is aimed at the purpose of showing how one can begin to stray away from the concept of Orientalism and stereotypical mindsets by developing a cultural understanding and becoming a respectful traveler. This website includes 4 blogposts talking about Orientalism and television, fashion, media as well as inspiration and ways to begin being appreciative of different cultures. At the top of the website there are tabs that discuss the metaphor of the site, how to move forward from Orientalism more practically, quotes to keep you away from stereotypes, and my personal relation to this topic and why it matters to me. I want this website to be a place where people can learn more about this crucial topic and be able to realize if they have been viewing a destination merely on stereotypes and allow them the resources they need to change their mindset.
One Petal At A Time is truly one of my favorite projects I have ever worked on. I want people to have a pleasant experience being on this site and see how being much more immersive in your traveling can have such a major impact on not only your life, but the cultures around you as well.
